Bringing the campus to the community

Based at the Virginia Tech Roanoke Center, the Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement (COTA) provides university-community engagement programs and leadership development opportunities in conjunction with Virginia Tech faculty.

Today's professional must be capable of leading change and people; generating results; managing human, financial, and information resources strategically; facilitating cooperation and teamwork; and deploying technical knowledge and skills effectively. We can help foster best practices and innovation across professions and sectors including business, industry, K-12 and post-secondary education, government, and nonprofit.

Programs are offered at the historic Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in Roanoke, Virginia. The hotel and conference center is a shining example of a campus-community partnership between Virginia Tech and the City of Roanoke.

Our programs

The Aspiring Superintendents Program is a full course credit opportunity designed specifically for school administrators who aspire to become a school district superintendent. The program is a partnership among the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS), the Virginia Tech School of Education and the Virginia Tech Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement (COTA).

How do you turn a passion for brewing into a successful business? Owning a brewery is more about running a business than brewing beer. This intimate 5-day class is designed for brewers, entrepreneurs, and connoisseurs who wish to understand the essentials of opening a craft brewery.

This is a year-long course open to 20 participants via an application process and is taught by brewer professionals and business owners.

School supervisors come together to examine how to employ coaching skills that will increase engagement and empower staff to take the lead in their job performance and satisfaction.

This series of workshops addresses environmental issues and provides the tools and skills necessary to develop and implement an ESMS.

Made up of the Aspiring Superintendents Program, the Recently Appointed Administrators Program, and the Advanced Leadership Program, this series helps educators take the next step in their careers.
